A Slight Shift in Perception

A Slight Shift in Perception
Dessie Spears
40 x 40 inches
Mixed Media

Inspiration is everywhere as this painting proves. It is the fourth in a series that was inspired by an apple sitting on Spear’s counter. The first three paintings were very rich in hue with saturated colors. As the seasons changed, so did the artist’s perception of the colors in the apple. Her colors softened and lightened bringing a gentler energy – a cracking open, a rebirth. This painting signals the start of spring and all that comes with it.

Meet the Artist:

Dessie Spears grew up on a nature preserve in Southern Indiana, spending most of her time working with horses in nature. When the weather cooled, she turned to reading, sewing and art of all types. Her very different parents influenced her greatly. Her mother listened to classical music and had a vast library of historical and mind-expanding books. There were always Psychology Today and The Smithsonian laying around. However, her father was all Zane Grey novels and Arizona Highways magazines. His music of choice was bluegrass. Both instilled hard work and honesty. Beauty was everything and nothing.

A career in the Operating Engineers chose her and Spear’s art became shaping the earth and navigating a very masculine world. After retiring, she took a deep dive into art. She studied with Nick Wilton’s Creative Visionary program and took composition, design and color courses with Mark Eanes. Currently she is a member and Artist Director of Pyro Gallery in Louisville, Ky.
